Present and Near-Future Reflected Light Searches for Close-In Planets
نویسندگان
چکیده
Close-in extrasolar giant planets may be directly detectable by their reflected light, due to the proximity of the planet to the illuminating star. The spectrum of the system will contain a reflected light component that varies in amplitude and Doppler shift as the planet orbits the star. Intensive searches for this effect have been carried out for only one extrasolar planet system, τ Boö. There exist several other attractive targets, including the transiting planet system HD 209458.

Photometric Light Curves and Polarization of Close-in Extrasolar Giant Planets
The close-in extrasolar giant planets [CEGPs], <∼ 0.05 AU from their parent stars, may have a large component of optically reflected light. We present theoretical optical photometric light curves and polarization curves for the CEGP systems, from reflected planetary light. Different particle sizes of three condensates are considered. In the most reflective case, the variability is ≈ 100 microma...
متن کاملDetecting Reflected Light from Close-In Extrasolar Giant Planets with the Kepler Photometer
NASA’s Kepler Mission promises to detect transiting Earth-sized planets in the habitable zones of solar-like stars. In addition, it will be poised to detect the reflected light component from close-in extrasolar giant planets (CEGPs) similar to 51 Peg b. Here we use the DIARAD/SOHO time series along with models for the reflected light signatures of CEGPs to evaluate Kepler’s ability to detect s...
متن کاملModels of Polarized Light from Oceans and Atmospheres of Earth-like Extrasolar Planets
Specularly reflected light, or glint, from an ocean surface may provide a useful observational tool for studying extrasolar terrestrial planets. Detection of seasurface glints would differentiate ocean-bearing terrestrial planets, i.e. those similar to Earth, from other terrestrial extrasolar planets. Sea-surface glints are localized and linearly polarized. The brightness and degree of polariza...
متن کاملMicrolensing Searches for Extrasolar Planets: Current Status and Future Prospects
I review results from, and future prospects for, microlensing searches for extrasolar planets. Analyses of well-sampled microlensing light curves by several collaborations have demonstrated that current searches are sensitive to ∼> 1MJ planets with few AU separations from M dwarfs in the Galactic bulge. To date, however, no unambiguous planetary detections have been made. Detailed analysis has ...
متن کاملSurvival of Terrestrial Planets in the Presence of Giant Planet Migration
The presence of “Hot Jupiters”, Jovian-mass planets with very short orbital periods orbiting nearby main sequence stars, has been proposed to be primarily due to the orbital migration of planets formed in orbits initially much further from the parent star. This migration affects the evolution of inner terrestrial planets in these systems. Previous analyses have assumed that no terrestrial plane...
